At the core of Harkness Roses is the development of new roses. This directly follows the tradition of rose nurserymen for hundreds of years before us, who obtained their roses by using many of the same practices that are still in use today. At Harkness the rose breeding is non-technical. There are no laboratory methods, just pollination by hand, and reliance on the roses to carry out their natural cycle. The main part of a rose breeder's work is in observing and selecting. Our efforts are focused on seeking better disease resistance, more perfume, more colours, and (of course), more flowers over a longer period.

Burgundy Ice Prose
Burgundy Ice Prose
H105xW75Scent 1
Several 'sports' of the old favourite 'iceberg' have emerged recently, and this one is amazing. A 'sport' is a natural variant of an existing rose, usually occurring as a colour change, and sometimes as a climbing version of a bush rose. The variant will share many characteristics with the original. 'Burgandy Ice' looks very similar to 'Iceberg' except for it's stupendous colour, dense, inky, dark plum, almost purple. It's a fantastic novelty rose.

Guy's Gold
H90xW70Scent 2
'Guy's Gold' is a celebration and memento of the Guys Hospital Nurses League. The League was formed in 1900 to benefit nurses at Guy's Hospital, and enable them to maintain links with the hospital and colleagues on a social and professional level.

During its nursery trials, at the start of each season 'Guy's Gold' would stand out like a beacon, blooming well in advance of it's neighbours. REpeat flowering follows quickly so that a season can produce several waves of bright, canary yellow. This rose always looks fresh and cheerful, it's suitable for any garden situation, and a great source of cut stems.

Colour tone is rich, eventually softening to light yellow. Growth is erect and densely branched, bearing a dense foil of glossy mid-green foliage as a backcloth for the blooms.

Here's a great chance to preview the Rose of the Year 2009. This is quite different from other roses, producing colossal clusters on a plant that seems to grow effortlessly, bearing a wealth of strong branches covered with sparkling clean foliage. This is a phenomenal variety that will raise the standard of easy-maintenace and flowering performance another notch. Congratulations and thanks are due to Gareth Fryer for breeding this outstanding new rose!

Sweet Haze

H70xW70Scent 4

'Sweet Haze' covers itself with very large clusters of single lilac-pink flowers that emit a tantalising, sweet fragrance. The dominant brownish stigma and dark yellow anthers really catch the eye, imparting a lively and natural look to the open flowers. As always with Rose of the Year winners, this is a healthy rose that flowers freely and repeats readily. It's an excellent choice for planting out in mixed borders of for container growing.

Sweet Haze
Yours In Continued Friendship
H90xW80Scent 3

Dual names for this rose, known to
41 Club members as 'Continued Friendship', and to the ladies of the National Association of Tangent Clubs as 'Yours in Continued Friendship'.

The rose is a spectacular addition for any garden. It's handsome blooms are plentiful trusses ot up to 7 blooms. The individual blooms are well filled with a scoop of petals in the 'cupped' form, they are long-lasting both in the garden and in the vase.

We recommend planting in groups as bedding and hedging, or to form a drift of colour as a highlight for a border. A single specimen will combine with summer flowers or ornamental shrubs, and may also be grown in large planters on patios and terraces to bring the pleasure of roses close to seating areas.

Misty Blue Jacrymin
H110xW80Scent 8

A steely lilac-blue that blooms as if there's no tomorrow, repeating with abandon . It's so heavily perfumed and so willing to bloom that we just could not pass it by, although as is often the case with this colour, it will benefit from protection.

Rachel Louise Moran Jacdrama
H100xW70Scent 7

This outstanding rose raised by Keith Zary, breeder at Jackson & Perkins in Calfornia, represents a giant step forward for striped roses It is more robust than previous striped varieties, growing with zest as a well-bunched plant that blooms prodigiously and repeats with gusto. The blooms are large and well-formed, borne either singly or in small trusses. To add to the sbundance of bloom, the perfume is strong, rich and fruity.

'Rache Louise Moran' is a multi-purpose garden rose, ideal for planting in groups where a dramatic effect is required, and perfect to grow among mixed flower borders. The temptation to cut for the vase will be impossible to resist, its long stems are fro elegant arrangements and the perfume will fill the room.

White Star 'Harquill'
H200xW200Scent 3

It has taken no less than 40 years for a climber in pure white to emerge from our breeding programme, showing that new roses do not occur at the drop of a hat. However, patience is well rewarded because this is a top-quality rose for walls, fences and trellis.

The colour is pure white, with no shading or blush; the foliage is a disease-tolerant as can be currently achieved; growth though rapid, reaches no more than moderate size, making this rose suitable for relatively small spaces.

'White Star' produces stiffish, medium length branches, ideal for flat training into a fan that will then fill with tiers of growth. Repeat bloom is reliable after a couple of seasons there will be a mass of pure white.
